Letters have been sent home with Year 10 students inviting parents/carers to the Year 10 Target Setting and Information evenings.
As students are embarking on their GCSE/BTEC courses, we will issue and explain the principles behind their target grades. The timing of controlled assessments and examinations will also be covered as well as guidance on how you can best support your child at this important stage.
We do hope that as many parents as possible will attend and look forward to seeing you on the evening. Please can you return reply slips to your child's Form Tutor. (Copies are provided below.)
We frequently revisit our school policies to ensure they are current and effectively address our fast changing educational environment. We have noticed that students are increasingly using mobile phones so that they are far from occasional use devices, whether this is to listen to music, texting, social messaging etc. Of course there are many positives to these aspects but too often we see students walking in the corridors with their heads down texting, or listening to music rather than engaging in the world around them, talking to their friends and teachers etc. On occasion this is also making some students late to lessons as the process of texting seems to slow the speed of travel down!
Consequently we are, from Monday 15th September, introducing a new protocol whereby we will confiscate phones for the rest of the day if students are seen to have mobile phones/headphones out during the school day. Students may still use their phones at break and lunchtime in the canteens/ Sixth Form Gallery or outside of school buildings. We may contact the parents of persistent offenders and ask them to come and collect phones. Please do read the draft Behaviour Policy which reflects these changes:
Thank you for your anticipated support.
Andy BurtonSenior Deputy Headteacher
Our first week back and all staff are very impressed with the calm and purposeful start. The new Year 7 students are keen and excited to be at Ousedale and we are delighted to see them. We are setting very high standards for students in terms of uniform, learning, engagement in lessons and in return increasing the rewards and opportunities on offer. We are confident the students will rise to the increased demands placed on them. I always want each child to have all opportunities open to them, but they need to recognise effort equals success - ensuring that will be possible starts on day one. The students have participated in their first Personal and Social Education lesson where they debated what we mean by British Values and identified what characteristics they wish to promote in themselves and see in others. They had much to contribute to this very interesting and topic and I am sure we shall return to it in the coming months.
I am pleased to report the building work which commenced on the Newport Pagnell site in April 2014 has finished on time ready for the start of the new term. The link below shows a few pictures for you to see: students enjoying the new space surrounding the canopy and the completed refurbished classrooms and corridors belonging to History and ICT. As one student said, ‘the new building and colours make me very happy’ and another student, currently in Year 13 and who had started her secondary education at Olney campus, said ‘the rooms look just like Olney’. Both comments demonstrate how important it is to have a nice environment in which to work and the impact it can have on student learning. Did I mention that all the toilets in this block have also been refurbished!
A number of staff joined us this September and two of these are new to the senior team. Mr McFadden joins us as the Deputy Head in charge of the Olney campus and Mr Grant joins as Assistant Headteacher for Key Stage 4 at Newport Pagnell. I am delighted to have them both on the team; they bring outstanding experience from two very good local schools.
The senior team are currently working closely with our Governing Body to develop a two year plan for the school and I shall communicate this to you before October half term. If you wish to join the Governing Body, they are a fantastic group of people and we are always on the lookout for those with the skills and background to support the running of the school ; do contact the clerk if you would like to know more.
Thank you for your continued support of the school.
